On August 14th, 2011, I sustained a devastating C5 cervical spine and neck injury as a result of a diving accident. The level and severity of the injury has left me a C5-C6 quadriplegic.
Recovery, rehabilitation, and independence are now my main focus.
I have made tremendous strides despite significant obstacles. Since the accident, I've regained some strength and mobility in my arms, as well as achieved improved respiratory function, shoulder function, bicep function, and balance. With intensive physical therapy, I'm confident I will continue to work towards greater mobility.
Given the sheer amount of daily assistance and personal medical care my injuries require, the need for a helping hand is essential. A recent publication estimates that C5 spinal cord injured patients require personal care assistance for the major portion of the day. While it is okay and at times necessary to depend on others for help, it is important for me to regain a sense of independence. I will continue to engage in physical therapy in order to build the strength and confidence needed to be as independent as possible.
